I think we’ve all done it with our kids—tell them to say sorry when we know they aren’t really sorry.

I know that saying “sorry” was part of the punishment for me. I could just say it and get out of problems…that I likely caused. And I know I made it part of the punishment for my kids—they could get out of problems the same way.

But what if there was more to saying “sorry”?

The Bible has two words for this—one for the New Testament and one from the Hebrew Scriptures. The greek is μετάνοια (metanoia) Metanoia is far richer than simply “changing your mind.” It implies a complete reorientation—a fundamental shift in how you perceive, judge, and act. (Or Think, Feel and Act)

The Hebrew word is שׁוּב “Shub” and it means to “return - turn around and go in the complete opposite direction.”

The English word that both these words translate into is Return or Repent.

I had to Repent and Return to God

Recently I had to repent. I had been going one direction and trying to make it work and most of it worked, but some things just were lacking… Listen, I believe that information is only as valuable as the transformation it helps facilitate. And when I’m just giving information, I know it’s not enough.

reI was just about to start recording my course “Live LIGHT with your Whole Heart”.

Let me give you some backstory.

My journey to understand what the Bible meant about doing things with our whole heart started years before. I had found seven things the Bible tells us to do with our whole heart. Seven is a good number. It means wholeness, completeness and if six is the number of human, seven is the number of God. I thought I had it all wrapped up.

But I was part of prayer time with the company I serve. They were praying specifically for our region and I had a few minutes so popped in on the call. The one leading the prayer time read from Joel.

Joel 2:12-13 NIV “Even now,” declares the Lord, “Return (shub) to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return (shub) to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

And the guy mentioned the Hebrew word return— is shub. And I knew I had to include Return to God as the eighth thing we had to do with all our heart. (And I combined Obey and Serve as one to keep the number to 9).

I knew I had to change things to get on what God wants me to say.

Are you ready to repent with your whole heart?

Can I pray for us to return?

The ancient Hebrews understood heart in a way that we need to understand and embrace. We use the word “heart” to say we’re doing something with our emotions. The ancient Hebrews understood our heart as not just the seat of our emotions but the seat of our decision and the seat of our action.

To do something with your whole heart means we decide, we feel and we do. I don’t think the order matters.

So to repent or return with our whole heart we need to:

Decide to repent

Feel empathy or remorse

Do what we can to make amends for what we’ve done and didn’t do.

So then the question becomes:

How do you know if you need to return to God?

That’s a great question.

You can ask yourself: “Is He Lord of my life?”

What does that mean?

That’s another great question.

Do you want the short answer or the longer answer?

Good news. I’ll give you both.

The short answer is: if the Bible calls it sin, your opinion doesn’t matter.

Little harsh?

Yah…that might take some unpacking. I’ll get to that soon.

But before I go on, remember God calls whatever ultimately hurts us or others sin. It makes us less of what He’s created us to be. The enemies’ plan is to make us less than who’ve He’s destined us to become. When we think the lie we’re believing is true, we’re hindered in becoming what God designed us to be. God hates sin because sin hurts us.

We’ll leave that there. Let me explain more about making God the Lord of your life.

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV84) But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.

Remember your heart is the seat of your emotions, the seat of your decisions, and the seat of your actions.

So since “in our hearts we set apart Christ as Lord” we need to see if He’s Lord of our attitude, Lord of our answer and Lord of our actions.

Scripture is the mirror that we look into to see if we’re becoming more and more like Christ or becoming less and less like him.

I find it’s possible to do both at the same time. In one area I’m becoming more like Christ, in another I may be agreeing with the enemy.

But the good news is He is going to finish the good work he started in me. That is his role.

My role is to return to him—to confess and repent. Confess that what I’m doing or not doing is sin and repent stop it and do what God wants me to do — whenever Holy Spirit convicts me that my life isn’t lining up with what He empowers me to be. I stop agreeing with the enemy about the lies I was taking as the truth, and I start living out of the truth that Holy Spirit reveals to me. This can be in my attitude, my answer and/or my actions.

Let’s unpack that.

Attitude to Return

Philippians 2:5-8 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Do I have the same attitude as Christ?

Ephesians 4:21-23 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Do I let the spirit renew my thoughts and attitudes?

1 Peter 4:1-2 So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.

When I suffer, do I show Christ?

Romans 8:6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Where is my peace?

Is He the Lord of my emotion?

Is He the Lord of my attitude?

Chuck Swindoll has said that I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hopes. When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me.

In your heart have you set apart Christ as Lord?

Is He Lord of your attitude?

Answer to Return

When Christ is set apart in my heart, he's Lord of my answers, that's my decisions. Look at these verses.

1 Peter 3:9-10 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.

Do I bless those who curse me?

Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

How do I respond to criticism?

I didn’t watch the Charlie Kirk memorial and I choose not to what the video of his assassination, but I saw the clip from his wife that the world stopped to notice.

Erika Kirk was addressing the crowd at the memorial. All the commentators were waiting for the riots to break out and the looters to appear—you can never have that many people gather without riots and looting.

But inside the stadium was a place of worship.

Chris Tomlin had stood before the most powerful people in America and led everyone to declare “the names above all names, who is worthy of all praise”.

And Erika shocked them all. This widow with a three year old and one year old said: (play video)

On the cross our Saviour said, ‘Father forgive them for they not know what the do”. And that man…that young man…I forgive him.

Christ needs to be the Lord of your answer.

Is Christ the Lord of my answers?

Is he the Lord of my decisions?

That's a question that should put us in our place.

It should stop us. It should be a time of reflection, a time of: “What am I doing?

Why am I doing it?

Have I brought this before God?

Am I doing it because of shame or to avoid shame or to win the approval of others?

What is the reason I'm doing these things?

“Am I doing it for the show? Am I doing it for the dough? Am I doing it because I worry? Am I doing it because I hurry? “

Or

Do I listen and obey?

Do I learn and apply?

Do I repent when I’m convicted?

In my heart have I set apart Christ as Lord?

Is He Lord of your Attitude? Is He Lord of your Answer?

The final question you can ask yourself is “Is He Lord of my Actions?

Actions that show we’ve returned

This can’t be a list of things you do and things you don’t do. We’ve tried that legalistic approach and it doesn’t work. It’s not the way God intended us to live. He made us to keep in step with Holy Spirit. Since we live by the Spirit, we need to keep in step with the Spirit. He wants us to listen and obey what He tells us to do.

James 4:17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

Am I sinning by not doing the good I know Holy Spirit is prompting me to do?

Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.

Am I doing what I know to do right?

1 Peter 3:11-13 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”

Do I seek peace and work to maintain it?

Hudson Taylor a pivotal missionary in China and the founder of the China Inland Mission has said:

Christ is either Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all.

He also said

The real secret of an unsatisfied life lies too often in an unsurrendered will.

He knew the joy of having Jesus the Lord of all. The kingdom of God lives through our lives and its righteousness, peace and joy.

When Christ is Lord of my life, he is the Lord of my actions, he's Lord of my attitude, he's Lord of my answers, he's Lord of my actions.

Let's say that again, he is Lord of my attitude, he's Lord of my answers and He's Lord of my actions.

What happens? Christ is Lord.

One day we're going to all stand before Him. In Philippians, it says every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This brings glory to God the Father.

Christ is Lord. We recognize He is Lord. We don’t make him Lord. He is Lord.

Set apart Christ as Lord now. Don’t wait for the right moment. If you wait, you might do it reluctantly. It’s important to act willingly, so start today.

In your heart have you set apart Christ as Lord?

Is He set apart as Lord?

Is Christ Lord of your attitude?

Is He Lord of your answer?

Is He Lord of your action?

It is so imperative for us in our hearts to set apart Christ as Lord.

I believe it's crucial to make use of our advantages here. We look to the Holy Spirit and Jesus for guidance. He will lead us. We make the plans, He directs our steps. We align ourselves with Him and we can trust Him with whatever we're doing. Righteousness, peace and joy are ours. As we trust him, the God of all hope fills us with peace and joy so we can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit.

In your heart, is Christ set apart as Lord?

If He’s not…return to Him with all your heart. Confess and Repent.

The Good News is that it’s the kindness of God that should lead us to repentance. (See Romans 2:4)

The Problem if we don’t return with with our whole heart

Too often we mistake His kindness with indifference and his patience with permission.
Too often, repentance becomes a half-hearted ritual—spoken words, quick prayers, or a vague sense of regret. We say "sorry" but hold onto old patterns, hurts, or hidden sins. Our hearts remain divided, and true transformation is missing. We need to learn to repent with our whole heart:

Decide to repent

Feel empathy or remorse

Do what we can to make amends for what we’ve done and didn’t do.

Does this Really Matter?

Shallow repentance leaves us stuck in cycles of guilt and shame. It blocks intimacy with God, hinders healing with others, and prevents us from experiencing the freedom He offers. Without wholehearted repentance, our faith shrivels, and our relationships suffer.

What If we learned to return?

What if our repentance was complete and honest? What if we stopped hiding, stopped making excuses, and truly let God into every corner of our lives?

Imagine what would happen when we return

Imagine a life where the shame is gone, and your relationship with God is restored. You walk in freedom, knowing you’re forgiven. Relationships heal. Old habits lose their grip. Joy returns. Peace settles in where there was unrest. You can learn to return with your whole heart.

How do we do return?

That’s another great question. I’m so glad you asked.

I’ve been looking for a place to for this tool.

TURN To God with Your Whole Heart Tool

T - Tell the Truth 1 John 1:9

U - Understand the Impact James 4:17

R - Receive Forgiveness Psalm 103:10

N - New Direction Acts 3:19

T — Tell the Truth

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
(1 John 1:9 NIV)

Make the decision to agree with God that what you did (or didn’t do) was sin.

Quietly or aloud, honestly admit to God (and to anyone you’ve wronged, if appropriate) what you have done or failed to do. Be specific—name either actions (commission) and inactions (omission).

“This is what I did and this is why it’s wrong”

Do I have anything I need to agree with God that it’s sin?

U — Understand the Impact

“Anyone, then, who knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” (James 4:17 NIV)

Feel the impact of what you did (or didn’t do). Empathy or remorse are both powerful emotions to pay attention to.

Understand it’s the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. (You feeling empathy or remorse for what you did—or didn’t do—could be the first step before deciding to confess.)

If you sinned against someone else and they bring it to your attention. Ask God to help you see how your sin affects Him, others, and yourself. Reflect on sins of omission as well as commission.

Do I know how my action (or inaction) impacted others?

R — Receive Forgiveness

“He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” (Psalm 103:10 NIV)

The ancient teachers said that we can sin against God and sin against each other. When we sin against God it’s easier to get forgiveness. Because when we repent, He’s going to forgive. When we sin against others—they might not want to forgive.

Jesus teaches us to forgive each other. What happens when someone withholds forgiveness?

That’s between them and God. Paul says,

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

What you can do—when you want to keep the relationship—is to rebuild trust.

But trust takes time.

It takes consistency over time, or camaraderie in teamwork, or compassion in tragedy or connection in synergy or convergence of testimony. It takes careful entrusting of self and careful entrusting of truth.

It takes time.

Confess and repent of the little things, or else they become a big thing.

You don’t want to have to rebuild trust. But you can over time.

After confessing, thank God for His mercy and forgiveness. Accept that you are cleansed because of Jesus.

If you don’t feel like you’ve been forgiven by God, it might be the sin the of unbelief. Scripture says that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 And “As far as from the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12 When you have done everything you can to make amends for the harm you’ve done to others, and have agreed with God that what you did or didn’t do was sin—if you don’t feel that you’ve been forgiven—it might be the sin of unbelief.

You can pray “Lord I believe, help my unbelief” Mark 9:24 and he will reveal to you the lie you’ve been believing and the truth that will set you free.

Will you trust him and His word?

Do I feel that I’m forgiven?

N — New Direction

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19 NIV)

Remember: confession is agreeing with God about your sin; repentance means changing your thinking and your direction.

In Greek μετάνοια (metanoia) Metanoia is built from two parts: “meta-” (after, beyond) and “noeo” (to think, perceive). So it’s not simply about changing one’s mind on a whim. It’s about a deep, fundamental shift in how you see things—a reorientation of your whole way of thinking.

In Christian usage, Metanoia is about reconsidering your values, actions, and beliefs in light of God’s truth.

Old things have passed away. Everything has been made new. This is Holy Spirit’s work—making us more and more and more like Jesus.

He’s going to finish the good work He’s started in us—that’s his role. Our role is to return to him—to repent—when Holy Spirit convicts me that my life isn’t lining up with what He empowers me to be.

We don’t do things the way we used to. We don’t think about things the way we once did. We don’t feel about things the way we used to.

We repent with our whole heart.

Am I being changed more and more into His image?

Paul told the Thessalonians to:

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

When we rejoice always—focus on God and His promises and trust that He is good—it changes our attitude. When we pray continually—exchange our thoughts with His thoughts and problems for His peace—our answers will be His answers. When we give thanks in all circumstances—train our brain to feel gratitude for simple things and show appreciation to the people He’s entrusted to us in our everyday world—our actions will be His actions.

We will be his hands and feet to the people around us. This is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Rejoicing Always changes our Attitude

Praying continually changes our Answers

Giving thanks at all times changes our Actions.

When we’re out of God’s will—in any area of our life—Repent with your whole heart.

Use the Turn to God with Your Whole Heart Tool get yourself back on track.

TURN to God with Your Whole Heart Tool

T - Tell the Truth

Do I have anything I need to agree with God that it’s sin?

U - Understand the Impact

Do I know how my actions (or inactions) impact others?

R - Receive Forgiveness

Do I feel that I’m forgiven?

N - New Direction

Am I being changed more and more into His image?

The Challenge / Next Steps:

Next time you hear Holy Spirit telling you to “repent,” don’t settle for guilt or regret. Invite God to do the deep work and repent with your whole heart.

Kway Future

The reason why I settled on this message has to do with What our church is considering…

We must be sure we’re hearing and obeying.

We need to be turning to something not just avoiding something.

We need to be sure we’re willing to change everything.

There will be times we’ll need to forgive. We may have times we need to ask for forgiveness. We’ll need to actively decide to be unoffendable.

We can’t simply let ourselves become more comfortable.

If God is doing a new thing out of these two churches we shouldn’t ever let hear ourselves say “That’s not how we do things..”

We shouldn’t bring past hurts into this new relationship. We need to allow Holy Spirit to heal us.

So I wanted to give us space to hear Holy Spirit voice tell us if we need to repent.

I’ve shown you the steps to repent with your whole heart. And I want to end by reminding you of His promise.

His promise to His people…which includes us…

…If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Is there anything you need to repent of? Is there anything communally we need to repent from?

We’ll make space for Holy Spirit to speak to us directly. Be open to what He impresses on you. Obey what he tells you to do.

Can I pray for you?

Father, for each person hearing these words, I ask for courage and honesty. Show us what needs to change. Give us hearts that are soft and open to you. Heal what is broken and bring new life where there was only regret. Thank you for your grace that meets us every time we turn to you.

Help us “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1) Amen.

Isaiah 30:15 NLT This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.

Take time to let Holy Spirit speak to you

Living with your Whole-Hearted: What Does It Mean?

Most of us think of “being whole hearted” as doing something with all our emotion. But true living with your whole heart involves three elements. Our heart is the seat of our emotion—yes—but it’s also the seat of our decision and the seat of our action. All three need to align and can’t be in contradiction when we live with our whole heart.

1. Decision

We make the decision to do something.

2. Action

We do something when we make that decision.

3. Emotion

We have a feeling that often comes when we make a decision and do something about it. Often it’s peace, hope

Whole-hearted living means engaging these three elements together, every day.

What’s Included in the Live LIGHT with your Whole Heart Course?

Read How to THRIVE and not just Survive

Read Isaiah 44:1-8 and Isaiah 44:21-26

The people of Israel were in for the long haul. Jerusalem would be destroyed. They would be taken away into captivity. But God wanted them to be encouraged. His plan was to prosper them and not to harm them. His plan was to give them a hope and future. Isaiah was encouraging them they could trust their maker through the tough stuff.

It’s been a long haul. We’ve all had to cope. We had to deal with the reality we’ve been facing. We know how to hope. Do we know how to THRIVE?

Last time I spoke I reminded you how we can HOPE at all times and in every situation

HOPE at all times and in Every Situation

H - Hold on to testimony - Revelation 12:11
O - Operate in reality - Hebrews 12:7
P - Pour out your heart to God - Philippians 4:6-7
E - Engage your whole heart with hope - Isaiah 40:27-31

But the word that is resonating with me for this year isn’t HOPE, it’s THRIVE. I don’t think it’s going to be all sunshine and rainbows this year. I think it’s a challenge for me to THRIVE in spite of anything that comes my way.

What does it mean to THRIVE?

I believe it means I can have peace and joy AND hope at all times and in every situation. I figured that’s a good definition for THRIVE - peace and joy and hope - it’s all part of the Kingdom. It’s bringing the Kingdom to earth. The Kingdom is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Paul starts his letter to the Romans and Peterson transliterates verses 16-17 this way.

Romans 1:16-17 It’s news I’m most proud to proclaim, this extraordinary Message of God’s powerful plan to rescue everyone who trusts him, starting with Jews and then right on to everyone else! God’s way of putting people right shows up in the acts of faith, confirming what Scripture has said all along: “The person in right standing before God by trusting him really lives.”

Are you ready to really live?

Has it been a while since you felt like you’ve really lived?

Guess what? Your standing with God hasn’t changed. His grace is still sufficient. You might have moved away. You might feel like it’s been a while since you’ve really lived. I want to help your feelings line up with your spiritual reality today.

You and I were made for so much more than to just survive. We were made to thrive.

How does the song go?

Joy unspeakable. Faith unsinkable. Love unstopped. Any thing is possible.

You were created to walk with God in the garden in the cool of the day. Sin came into the world and you bore the consequences. Jesus came and reversed the curse and took your place and invited you to take His yoke that is easy and burden that is light. You are a child of God creation longs to be revealed. You are a living light. Do not conform but be transformed, so you can have peace and joy and hope at all times and in every situation.

Today I’m going to share with you the

How to THRIVE Tool

THRIVE

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25
H - Honest in my reflection - Proverbs 28:18
R - Rest and to be Renewed - Psalm 127:2
I - Ignite my spiritual fervour - Romans 12:9-17
V - Victoriously live - Romans 8:31-39
E - Embrace who God says I am - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

T - Tune into Holy Spirit

Galatians 5:25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

How do you do that? The rest of the chapter shows us.

I’ve put it in an acrostic to help you remember - HUMBLE

HUMBLE Yourself Before God and Others

Galatians 5

H - Hope in his promises v.5 (wait patiently to receive)
U - Understand faith expresses itself in love v.6
M - Maintain freedom by serving others in love v.13
B - Ban what the sinful nature craves v.16 (Crucify your passions and desires)
L - Let the fruit of Spirit grow v.22 (they are going to grow, don’t get in the way)
E - Enjoy peace with others v.26 (Follow the Spirit’s leading in every area)

That’s what Paul tells the Galatians it means to keep in step with the Spirit.

How have you been doing with that?

What would Holy Spirit tell you if you ask him if your keeping in step with him?

To THRIVE we need to be HUMBLE

To THRIVE we need to remember to be HUMBLE so we can tune into Holy Spirit.

H - Honest in your reflection

Proverbs 28:18 “The one whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but the one whose ways are perverse will fall into the pit.”

In order to THRIVE we need to be honest in three ways.

1. Honest with ourselves - admit when we’re struggling
2. Honest with those around us - be vulnerable when we need help
3. Honest with God - practice lament and admit we need his help through

Yes, we praise him in the storm. Yes, we praise him before the battle is won. Yes, we praise him before the answer comes, and when we do that with gratitude it changes our attitude.

Psalm 103:2 Let all I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

But we don’t put on plastic masks and say, “Thank you Jesus” when we feel everything but gratitude. We need to be honest in our reflection. We need to pour out our heart to God. We need to exchange our problems for his peace.

Are you honest in your reflection?

Do you turn from his gaze?

What would Holy Spirit impress on you if you asked him?

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25
H - Honest in my reflection - Proverbs 28:18

R - Rest and to be Renewed

Psalm 127:2 It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

What is rest?

Isaiah 30:15-16 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it. You said, ‘No, we will get our help from Egypt. They will give us swift horses for riding into battle.’ But the only swiftness you are going to see is the swiftness of your enemies chasing you!

Have you been trusting in horses and trusting in chariots or have you been trusting in the name of the Lord?

Rest is trust.

REST is Trust

R - Relying on God to finish what he started - Philippians 1:6
E - Engaging his Rhythm of praying and obeying - Luke 5:16, John 5:19
S - Stewarding what he’s entrusted to you - 2 Peter 1:3
T - Thanking him for what he’s done and is doing, not worrying about what’s left undone 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

It’s not sitting on your hands. It’s not waiting for God to do what he’s already told you in Scripture to do or impressed personally what you need to do.

Are you resting?

Remind yourself of what Jesus has done and promised to do for you.

Testimony and living out the prophecies over your life that allows you to grow in trust or start to trust again.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Rest is our part… Yes Jesus gives us rest, but we need to take up his yoke and learn from him.

Renewal is God’s part.

5 Ways God Renews Me

1) My Strength -

Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint

2) My Soul -

Psalm 23:3 He leads me by still water, he restores my soul

3) My Willing Spirit -

Psalmc 51:10-12 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

4) My Mind -

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will

5) My Knowledge of God -

Colossians 3:10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Your job is to rest in his love…let him give you his rest.

God’s job is to renew your strength, your soul, your willing spirit, your mind and your knowledge of Him.

Are you resting in His love?

Are you allowing and inviting him to renew you?

What would Holy Spirit say if you took the time to ask him?

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25
H - Honest in my reflection - Proverbs 28:18
R - Rest and to be Renewed - Psalm 127:2

I - Ignite my spiritual fervour

Romans 12:9-17NIV Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practise hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.

How do you ignite your fervour? How do you naturally do all these things? It can’t be a checklist. It can’t be overwhelming.

How do you ignite your spiritual fervour?

Repent and return to God’s presence. In his presence is fullness of joy.

Revelation 2:1-5 ‘To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

How was your faith expressed at the most thriving part of your life?

What are the things you did at first? Were you in the Bible? Were you spending a lot of time in prayer? Were you overwhelmed a love for others? Were you praying in the Spirit?

Faith is the natural response to the revelation of God. We know when we’re not in right relationship with God his revelation can be limited in our lives.

So what do we do?

James 4:7-8 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.

Confession and Repentance are the tools God gives us to be in right relationship with him.

Can you look God in the eye?

Can you spend time alone with him in silence?

Do you need to ask Holy Spirit if you’re living offended at God?

What would Holy Spirit impress upon you if you took the time to ask?

When we go through the motions, when our goal is simply to cope, we can easily pull away from God. This is the danger in not meeting together. This is problem of not making space to connect with him. You’re prayer life will tell you if you’ve pulled away from God.

Have you withdrawn from God?

Confess and repent.

When we are in survival mode, we often forget that through the power and blood of Jesus Christ we have ultimate victory. Yes, we may face trials and difficulties, and even though they seem like they last forever, one day, they will be over, and we will have victory.

Romans 8:31-39 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How do you victoriously live?

STAND In Christ’s Victory

S - Stop giving God credit for the works of the one who comes to steal, kill and destroy. - John 10:10
T - Treat all hardship as discipline knowing he will work all things together for good. - Hebrews 12:7-11
A - Agree to cast all your cares upon him, because he cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:7
N - Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. - Romans 12:11-13
D - Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything and thank him in all things, knowing that’s his will for you. - Philippians 4:6-7

Are you living victoriously?

Are you ready to thrive and not merely survive?

What would Holy Spirit impress upon you if you took the time to ask?

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25
H - Honest in my reflection - Proverbs 28:18
R - Rest and to be Renewed - Psalm 127:2
I - Ignite my spiritual fervour - Romans 12:9-17
V - Victoriously live - Romans 8:31-39
E - Embrace Who God says I am - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

The only opinion that really matters about me is God’s.

I need to take thoughts captive that disagree about what he says about me.

If I want to THRIVE I need to….

Erase shame. Embrace grace.

I need to erase shame.

How do I erase shame?

Believe him that when I confess my sin he is faithful and just to forgive me my sin and cleanse me from all unrighteousness.

If I don’t FEEL forgiven, I should consider repenting from the sin of unbelief. He will free me from that.

I should feel guilt from sin.

I should never feel shame for sin I’ve confessed and repented of.

Confession is agreeing with God that it’s sin. Repentance is turning around and doing the exact opposite. He has given me everything I need for life and godliness.

There is no shame in my game.

I also need to embrace grace.

What is grace?

God’s supernatural enabling to do what he tells me to do. He empowers me a accomplish every good work prompted by faith.

Do you embrace who God says you are?

Do you erase shame?

Do you embrace grace?

What would Holy Spirit impress upon you if you took the time to ask?

Conclusion

I don’t believe the year to come will be all rainbow and sunshine. I do believe he wants me to THRIVE and have peace and joy and hope at all times and in every situation.

When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan. Proverbs 29:2

All creations longs for the children of God to be revealed. Will you choose to THRIVE and not merely survive?

Will you?

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25
H - Honest in your reflection - Proverbs 28:18
R - Rest and to be Renewed - Psalm 127:2
I - Ignite your spiritual fervour - Romans 12:9-17
V - Victoriously live - Romans 8:31-39
E - Embrace Who God says you are - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Challenge

Will you take time to listen to what Holy Spirit is telling you today? I’m going to give time for you to hear from God. He’ll likely speak directly to your heart. Don’t think you’re not hearing him if it’s not an audible voice. If you have a pen and paper you can write a question and write down his response. If you’re able to quite yourself and sense what He’s saying, do whatever your comfortable with. I’ll pray a prayer inviting Holy Spirit to speak and we’ll play some music quietly to help you hear what he says. We won’t spend a long time, but we will create a moment. His words are life. We need to hear what he’s saying. Take time to connect with him. After a moment, I’ll close us in prayer and there will be a few announcements before we go. But if you’re watching now or watching later…take the time to hear from God, knowing it’s his will for you to THRIVE.

I expect in this moment you will…

T - Tune into Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:25

Can I be still and know He is God?

H - Honest in your reflection - Proverbs 28:18

What does God think of me?

R - Rest and to be Renewed - Psalm 127:2

Can I rest in His presence?

I - Ignite your spiritual fervour - Romans 12:9-17

Will I be joyful in hope and patient in affliction?

O Holy Night!
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.

Two thousand years ago, when the world seemed still and life was going on in it’s normal frustration, there was a flurry of activity in the heavenly realm. To us, it appeared that nothing would ever change. But soon heaven would burst into life right in front of our eyes.

That night, long ago, when most people were fast asleep, a group of shepherds were watching their sheep. They probably had a fire going, quietly chatting among themselves. There was not a sound but the soft night noises of sheep in the pasture. And in that quiet, hidden place a burst of light appeared and angels from heaven sang to shepherds. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace on whom his favour rests.”

Can you imagine yourself sitting there by the fire with the warm glow lighting your face, a soft blanket around your shoulders, a hot drink between your hands.

It might feel like nothing will ever change. It may feel like heaven is silent for you. It might feel that God has no interest in your life. It may feel that all around is darkness… nothing…. silence.

But God… God bursts heaven into our world and gives us the the thrill of hope.

God is always working behind the scenes for your good. His angels announced peace on those on whom his favour rests. That’s you! He is called wonderful, counsellor, almighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace. He is Immanuel, God with us.

Our God is God of the suddenlies. You can once again know the thrill of hope.

You can know that regardless of what your feelings say…

At the right moment heaven will burst into light with singing over your life. He rejoices over you with singing.

A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Do you have the thrill of hope? Does your weary soul rejoice?

You and I can have weary souls. We need real hope to keep us rejoicing.

The problem is hope deferred makes the heart sick.

Has your hope been disappointing you?

Let’s think of others players in this story. What about the wise men who traveled so far?

Can you imagine yourself walking under a star lit sky?

Can you see the the twinkling lights so vast in the darkness, as far as you can see?

The night sky can make us feel so insignificant, so lost.

One of my favourite Calvin and Hobbes comic strip has Calvin looking up into the night sky and yelling to the cosmos “I am significant!” followed two panes later with the thought…“screamed the speck of dust”

We can feel so insignificant, so lost.

But sometimes lost is OK.

Sometimes lost takes us places we would have never got to otherwise.

The magi might have felt lost… like they didn’t know where they were or where they were going.

But they knew they had to follow the star.

Sometimes we can be so determined not to get lost.

But this year we all find ourselves lost.

Our five year goals and life plans are out the window.

There has never been a better year to know…to really know… to live with the hope that will not disappoint.

We have been waiting. We have been floundering.

We have had the goal post moved again and again and again.

We thought there were answers. We’ve been disappointed.

We’ve been told to wait. We’ve been told be patient.

We’ve been told to wait more. We’ve been told to be more patience.

Hope can take us to places we could have never have imagined.

We might not even know what we’re looking for,

but we may find God himself in a way we didn’t expect.

We need to be like the wise men and follow our star.

What is the star for our weary soul?

It’s hope.

Real hope. It’s the the thrill of hope that allows the weary soul to rejoice.

Real hope comes with real faith and faith is our natural response to His revelation.

You can can have peace and joy and hope at all times an in every situation. It doesn’t come with sticking your head in the sand. It’s not guaranteed when it’s all rainbows and sunshine. It’s a walk of faith. The good news is God empowers us to accomplish every good work prompted by faith and our faith is our natural response to his revelation.

Let me give you a tool to help you hope when you have a weary soul.

The HOPE when it hurts tool

HOPE

H - Hold on to testimony
O - Operate in reality
P - Pour out your heart to God
E - Engage your whole heart with hope

Let’s unpack this...

H - Hold on to testimony

Revelation 12:11 And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

What has God done for you in the past? What has he done for others? There is a power in story. Remember you own, engage with what others tell you. Testimony and journaling

Am I holding on to the testimony of what God has done?

O - Operate in reality

Hebrews 12:7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?

If you’re not feeling like you’ve been floundering, you either have the patience of Job or you’re ignoring the realities of today.

Advent waiting - Not “let go and let God” but “trust God and get going”

Stockdale paradox

“This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

Am I confronting the most brutal facts of my current reality?

P - Pour out your heart to God

Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalms of lament allow us to pour out our complaint to God. Don’t worry that you’ll offend God with the truth of your emotion. He knows better than you what you feel like.

Your feelings might not make proper theological sense, but they show you want you really believe.

Take your complaint to God. Exchange your problems for his peace. You exchange your problems for his peace with thanksgiving.

Am I making use of lament?

E - Engage your whole heart with hope

Isaiah 40:27-31 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God’? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Decision - speak to your soul

Psalm 42:11 TPT So I say to my soul, “Don’t be discouraged. Don’t be disturbed. For I know my God will break through for me.” Then I’ll have plenty of reasons to praise him all over again. Yes, he is my saving grace!

Instead of saying “Why me?” learn to ask Holy Spirit “What do you want me to learn?”

Action - do what helps with hope

Proverbs 3:5 NLT Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Rest - Mark 48:3 Jesus took naps. Be like Jesus. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap.

Exercise - (joke) I wanted to go jogging but Proverbs 28:1 says “The wicked run when no one is chasing them” so there’s that…

Life giving relationship - Proverbs 12:25 Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

Emotion - have peace rule in your heart

Colossians 3:15 NLT And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Nothing is worth it if it costs you your peace.

Worry isn’t worth it if it costs you your peace.

Planning isn’t worth it if it costs you your peace.

Hoping isn’t worth it if it if it costs you your peace. Real hope will give you your peace not cost you your peace.

If you don’t have peace, Ask Holy Spirit what lie you are believing…Peace and Joy and Hope come from trusting God, so if you don’t have peace and joy and hope, it’s because your believing a lie more than you’re trusting God.

Use this statement to help you define what you’re feeling…

“It might not be true, but it feels like it’s true that…”

Do I hope with my whole heart?

Max Lucado describes hope this way:

“It is a zany, unpredictable dependence on a God who loves to surprise us out of our socks and be there in the flesh to see our reaction.” (Max Lucado, God Came Near page 89)

Can your weary soul rejoice again?

Yes! Don’t let it go another day for you. Embrace the hope of God taking on flesh and camping out for a while. GOD with us!

The thrill of hope can be yours again.

Remember the Hope when it Hurts Tool

HOPE

H - Hold on to testimony - Revelation 12:11
O - Operate in reality - Hebrews 12:7
P - Pour out your heart to God - Philippians 4:6-7
E - Engage your whole heart with hope - Isaiah 40:27-31

Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Discerning the ALIAS of my Emotions Tool

What would it feel like to experience the truth of scripture in our emotions and what if peace ruled your heart? What if you trusted God to empower you with every good work prompted by faith? And what if you knew you lived with his yoke that is easy and a burden that is light?

You would need to discern what your emotions are telling you. I've got a tool for that.

Discerning the ALIAS of my Emotions Tool

You need to know how to discern what your emotions are telling you. And yes, it's time for a tool.

This is the discerning by emotion tool and we call it... ALIAS is the acronym. I don't know why I settle on acronyms, but I like them for tools.

How do we discern our emotions?

First one is ask God to ask Holy Spirit to reveal hidden sins. Do I say I believe something about you that I don't really believe? "You know God, I haven't had peace this past week. Why am I not trusting you?" "What do I say that I believe about you that I really don't believe?" The great news is Holy Spirit will show you. He loves to show us that. He will show you that. Be keen to listen.

The next part.

Look, the L is Look. Look to see what he will say. That's from Habakkuk 2:1 God tells Habakkuk to look to hear what he will... Look to see... that's from Habakkuk 2:1 The way that I use that verse is in conversational journaling. I write down a question for God. I'm in the flow of Holy Spirit. I am in his presence. And I ask him a question and then write down his response. I don't worry about it lining up with scripture. I don't worry about it aligning with my thoughts. I'm just writing as it comes to me. Afterwards I'll take that and make sure it lines up with scripture. I'll take that and make sure it lines up with the nature of God. I've been doing it for so many years. When I started, I would bring it to someone who is wiser than me and get his input on it. But I generally will do that if it's something really that I think is from God but isn't.

But...I've learned to trust that.

And it's given me great peace and an easy yoke, by the way.

Anyway,

Number three - Inquire: You ask Holy Spirit what lie you're believing. And that's a great way to do it if you're conversational journaling, "What lie am I believing?" "Why do I feel like I can't trust you to take care of this God?" "Why do I feel like I've got to do this on my own?" "Why do I feel like I'm not supported in this?" "Why?" Holy Spirit will show you.

The next phase...

You agree - with the lie you're believing. This is the confession and repentance part; confession is agreeing with God with the truth he reveals to you. That's confession. Repentance is turning around and doing the exact opposite. You can do that with Holy Spirit's help.

The S:

Final is Seek Him. And ask him for the truth if he wants you to know.

Often how this breaks down is you may have an image: "What lie are you believing?" Well, "When did I start believing that lie?" He'll take you to a memory. In that memory what's going on? Let me look. "Let me see what's going on God." What's happening in that memory? OK, "God, where are you in that memory?" "What's the truth of this that you're showing me?"

And when he reveals the truth of those situations.... those memories he wants to heal, those things that we are believing not because of this incident but because of something that happened years ago....

The interesting thing that I've found working with people around forgiveness is sometimes people can decide to forgive and they feel like they've forgiven the person. Other times they make the decision to forgive and they don't feel like they've forgiven until they actually bless the other person. Whether that's saying a blessing or if it's a safe situation they can go back and go and actually do something to bless that person—whatever Holy Spirit's telling them to do—and as long as their emotions—they're back—it's OK.

They feel like they've forgiven them.

Still other people make the decision; they do that action they bless—and yet they can't get over it; they don't feel like they've forgiven.

The only solution I've come up with is to use this tool and allow Holy Spirit to use this tool and get to the place where he will heal those former offenses that we have not forgiven. Remarkable things happen when that happens.

Other times people give up because they say they've forgiven someone and they don't feel like they've forgiven. And they take the next step and they bless someone but they don't feel like they've forgiven. And they don't know what to do for the next step—to actually feel like they've forgiven someone.

I've been talking about forgiveness, but this can happen for anything that's going on. Generally, it's a forgiveness issue.

But,

you know, we pick up offenses all the time. We pick up things that sometimes it's from good people who want us to succeed, and other times it's from evil people who want to do us harm. Sometimes it's from neglectful people who let us go.

But all of us are wounded and all of us need healing.

We need to allow Holy Spirit to heal us. We need well-healed wounds. Hurt people hurt people, but healed people heal people. And you and I need to be healed so we can help heal those around us.

So peace needs to rule our hearts, but every emotion will show us what we really believe. If you use this tool, you can find out. Let God heal those things that don't line up with the truth of scripture, those emotions that don't line up with the truth of scripture. And it'll revolutionize your life. It will transform you with Holy Spirit's help. So I would encourage you to do that. And I want to challenge you. Will you allow peace to rule and insist that the rest of your emotions serve you by showing you what you really believe? Can I pray for you?
