Celebrating the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

Gratitude is a powerful tool that can shift our perspective and enhance our well-being. One way to harness this power is through a structured practice, such as the Gratitude Challenge. Today, we celebrate the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge, an initiative designed to help individuals cultivate a deeper appreciation for life.

Problem

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity and overlook the blessings that surround us. Stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction can cloud our minds, making it difficult to recognize the good things in life. This is where the Gratitude Challenge comes in. By committing to a period of focused gratitude, we can retrain our minds to notice and celebrate what truly matters.

Does This Really Matter?

You might wonder if participating in a 70-day challenge really makes a difference. The answer is a resounding yes! Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, improved mental health, and stronger relationships. When we take time each day to acknowledge what we are thankful for, we create a positive feedback loop that enhances our overall well-being.

Scripture

Many are familiar with the biblical verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This verse encourages us to appreciate both the highs and lows of life. By engaging in the Gratitude Challenge, we embody this spirit of thankfulness, learning to express appreciation even during tough times.

What If?

What if you dedicated just a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for? Picture yourself waking up in the morning, taking a deep breath, and listing three things that bring you joy. This simple practice can set a positive tone for your day and help you face challenges with resilience.

Imagine

Imagine keeping a gratitude journal for 70 days. Each day, you jot down something different that you appreciate—be it a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or even a sunny afternoon. As the days pass, you’ll begin to notice patterns and themes in your life. Your perspective will shift as you start to recognize how much beauty and kindness exists around you.

My Experience for the Inaugural 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

I’ve said it for years, but I think I’ve only started to grasp it in the past 70 days…

Gratitude is a game changer.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I know what the studies show—if you feel gratitude and write it in journal in 21-28 days you’ll report being 10% happier. But I didn’t expect—choosing to give thanks, feeling gratitude for what I give thanks for and showing appreciation for what I feel gratitude for—to make such a profound difference in my life.

I’d tell people this is what I’m doing, “Well that’s easy”. I’m “The challenge is doing is every day for 70 days” and it was. By day 28 I was realizing I was laughing out loud more and singing worship songs when none were playing. It became fun…until around day 43. I got out of my rhythm.

My rhythm was to journal. I write down my thoughts to God. Present them to him so he can direct my steps or pour out my complaint to Him—yes those days still happen. Then I would write “What do you want me to feel gratitude for today?” And I’d meditate and read the Bible. Often in the meditation or Bible Reading I’d feel gratitude. If it didn’t happen, I’d be still and know He is God, then follow where my compassion led in my thoughts. Soon I’d feel gratitude, then I would write what I felt gratitude in the journal. Often it was for God or something He does, so my journal entry would naturally turn to praise because that’s how we show appreciation to God for who He is and what He does.

This is a rhythm I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

I am changed and I am being changed through gratitude. It’s a game changer.

You can do your own 70-Day Gratitude Challenge any time. You can do it with any body. My material is decidedly Christian, but you can do with people of any faith or no faith. All you need to do is:

Every day for 70 days…

Choose to give thanks
Feel grateful for what you give thanks for
Show appreciation for what you feel gratitude for

And figure out how you’ll do it as a group. The possibilities are endless. You do you. Daily phone call or group text; weekly check in through a video call on at a local coffee shop; celebrating milestones—like letting someone in when they indicate they want to be in your lane—with a group cheer or night out.

Thanksgiving is a great time to start.

Studies show that 3 sets of 21 or 63 - 70 days our brains move our conscious thoughts to the autonomic part of our brain. You’ll naturally feel gratitude in about 63 - 70 days - which is why the challenge is that long.

Also did you know we can’t hold anxiousness and gratitude in our minds at the same time? It’s either one or the other.

In the journey of my life, I have come to believe in God’s timing being perfect. He has a time for everything, a season activity under the heavens. He makes all things beautiful in His time. I am thankful I can trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding; in all my ways I submit to His kingship, and He makes my paths straight.

At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declares that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I choose to bow my knee now in gratitude.

I thank God that trusting in the God of all hope fills me with all peace and hope and joy, so I can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit. As I trust in the Lord and do good, I live safely in the land and prosper. As I take delight in the Lord, He gives me my heart’s desires. But I must commit everything I do to the Lord and trust Him, and He helps me. He will make my innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of my cause will shine like the noonday sun.

I thank God He is Immanuel - God with us. He’s always with us. I need to be with Him. I will be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act. Not worrying about evil people who prosper or fretting about their wicked schemes, in repentance and rest is my salvation, in quietness and trust is my strength.

I will not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time, I will reap a harvest if I do not give up. I know those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

I thank God for His grace so I can be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. I know the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, I will wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. The Father knows the plans He has for me, plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. He is working all things together for the good. God is so good!

God is teaching me to be content, whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I am learning the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. The secret is I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.

Today, I am thankful that Jesus is Lord and I can trust in God’s timing. Through patience, faith, perseverance, and surrender, I find peace and hope in knowing that His plans are always perfect. In every season of waiting, I believe God is working behind the scenes, orchestrating everything according to His divine timing.

I wake up and choose to be thankful, for I know this leads to feeling gratitude. Savouring small pleasures, I notice when a neighbour takes a minute to greet me with a smile and chat about the weather. I think about how delicious my first cup of coffee tastes.

I keep a journal. I write about the pleasant things that happen to me each day. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations.

I show my appreciation and I’m not selfish. I don’t try to impress others because I want to be humble, thinking of others before I think of myself. Not looking out only for my own interests, I take an interest in others, too.

I write thank-you letters and try to make them creative and memorable, so my friends and family know how much I appreciate their thoughtfulness. When possible, I thank others in person too. As I think about how much others have helped me, and I try to contribute something back. I pay it forward as well and look to do something nice for a stranger whenever I can. I know God loves a cheerful giver.

I give thanks for my relationships and give thanks to God for them whenever I think of them. I ask God to give us all hearts to know Him—who to know is life eternal.

I let my spouse know how much I count on their love and support. I hug them whenever I can. A blessing too early in the morning can be considered a curse. So I love and honour them. I tell my children that I am proud of them for trying, regardless of the results. I encourage them to find out what pleases the Lord.

I show my appreciation to God. I give thanks for salvation and I give thanks for my health. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases and redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! My appreciation for God turns to praise.

I praise him with my whole heart. I will praise the name of God with a song; and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. I will praise Him every day; yes, I will praise Him forever. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.

Today, I choose to be thankful; I cultivate a sense of gratitude and I plan to show my appreciation from the moment that I wake up. I notice the good things in my life and acknowledge the many acts of kindness that I have received. My boundary lines have fallen on pleasant places.

  2. In what ways can I show my appreciation to others and express humility in my interactions?
  3. How can I deepen my appreciation for Your blessings in my life and express gratitude for Your love and provision?

I wake up each morning with a heart full of gratitude, for the Lord has blessed me abundantly beyond what I could ask for or imagine. I find strength when I cultivate a heart of thanksgiving so that I can be more and more firm in my faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. Faith comes by hearing the good news of Christ Jesus.

I choose to not give God credit for the works of the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. And I treat all hardship as discipline, knowing He will work all things together for good. I cast all my cares on Him because He cares for me. And I am never lacking in zeal, but keep I keep my spiritual fervour serving the Lord. I am joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. I don’t worry about anything, but I pray about everything and thank Him in all things, knowing that’s His will for me.

I know how to turn my hurt into hope. I trust in the Lord with all my heart and don’t lean on my own understanding. In all my ways, I acknowledge Him and He makes my path straight. The God of all hope fills me with peace and joy as I trust in Him, so that I overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit.

I know how to renew my strength. As I wait on the Lord, He renews my strength. Sometimes I rise on wings as eagles, sometimes I run and do not grow weary, sometimes I walk and do not faint. I am confident I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, so I am strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. I am still and know He is God.

I know how to exchange my problems for His peace. With thanksgiving I enter His gates and with praise I enter His courts. I tell Him what I need and I thank Him for what He’s done. Because He cares for me, I cast my cares on Him. I don’t fear because He is with me. I am not dismayed because He is God. He strengthens me and helps me and upholds me with His righteous right hand.

Today, I know gratitude is a powerful force that strengthens my faith for the long haul of life. It allows me to appreciate God’s blessings, to trust He works all things together for the good, and to find peace amidst life’s challenges. With a heart filled with gratitude, I can stand firm in my faith and face the reality of my day-to-day of every day with all the grace, hope, and joy He provides.

When I laugh, my heart is lifted, and my burdens feel lighter. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. I laugh at the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. What He intends for evil, my God will use for the good. Gratitude for the good things of God makes it easy for me to laugh.

My mouth is filled with laughter, and my tongue with shouts of joy. Indeed, when I laugh, it is a testament to the great things the Lord has done for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. And He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagles as I trust and wait on the Lord!

In times of trouble, I remember He will fill my mouth with laughter and my lips with shouting. He rejoices over me with singing. He quiets me with His love. Even in the midst of difficulties, laughter can fill my mouth as He brings me joy.

Laughter also brings healing to my soul. A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but from the sorrow of the heart, the spirit is crushed. When I choose laughter, I am choosing to mend my spirit and find comfort in the midst of pain.

Laughter is good medicine. I look to see how God sees my pain. He speaks life and hope and truth. He tells me to be a child to enter His Kingdom. A 4-year-old laughs 300 times a day and a 40-year-old laughs about four. I want to be more like His child.

I am joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. When laughter fills my heart, it becomes easier to hold on to hope and trust in God’s plan for my life.

I remember there is a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. In this moment, I am embracing the time appointed for joy.

When I laugh, I let go of anxiety and trust in God’s provision. I am not anxious about anything, but pray about everything with thanksgiving. As I trust in Him, the God of hope fills me with peace and joy so I can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit. He makes known to me the path of life; you fill me with joy in His presence, with eternal pleasures at His right hand.

A cheerful heart has a continual feast. When laughter fills my heart, it is as if I am partaking in a feast of joy and contentment that surpasses any worldly circumstances. Laughter reminds me of God’s goodness and faithfulness. The Lord has done great things for me; I am glad. When I laugh, I am expressing my gratitude for all the great things God has done in my life.

Today, in laughter that I find strength, healing, and joy. I am reminded of God’s presence and provision in every aspect of my life. So I embrace laughter and find solace in its transformative power. I am thankful I can laugh.

The more grateful I am, the more reasons I find to be thankful. Each day, as I wake up and breathe in the fresh morning air, I am reminded that the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, so great is His faithfulness. It fills my heart with gratitude to know that I have been given another opportunity to experience the beauty of life.

As I go about my daily tasks, I remember to commit my work to the LORD, so my plans may be established. I work with my whole heart at whatever I do, as though I am working for the Lord rather than for people. I know the Lord will give me an inheritance as my reward, and that the Master I am always serving is Christ. Since I live by the Spirit, I keep in step with the Spirit. And thankfulness becomes easier and easier.

I won’t give God credit for the works of the one who comes to kill, steal, and destroy. He is good and in a good mood. I am not anxious about anything, but I pray about everything. With thanksgiving, I make my requests known to my loving Father. I treat all hardship as discipline, knowing He is good and will work all things together for good. I cast my cares on Him because I know He cares for me. Remembering this makes me more and more thankful.

Temptations in my life do not differ from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than I can stand. When I am tempted, He shows me a way out, so that I can endure. How awesome is He?

He empowers me to accomplish every good work prompted by faith. So it means He gives me faith…and the power to accomplish every good work prompted by faith. He tells me to do something and gives me His empowering grace to see it done. Thank you, Father, for loving me like You do.

And thank You for taking care of me and all my needs. I know that as I sow generously and don’t give reluctantly and under compulsion, You generously provide all I need and that I will always have everything I need and plenty left over to share with others.

Today I realize that the more grateful I am, the more reasons I find to be thankful. I choose to remember God’s love, faithfulness, and provision in my life. They inspire me to cultivate a heart of gratitude and seek opportunities to give thanks in all circumstances.

  1. How can I cultivate a heart of gratitude and thankfulness in my daily life, knowing that Your mercies are new every morning and Your faithfulness is great?
  2. In what ways can I commit my work to You and seek to serve You wholeheartedly, knowing that You reward those who diligently seek You?
  3. How can I rely on Your faithfulness and provision when faced with challenges or temptations, trusting that You will provide a way out and empower me to endure?

I find solace and joy as I meditate on the promises of my Heavenly Father. His word is a lamp unto my feet, guiding me through every twist and turn of life’s journey. With trust that is growing, I lean on His promises, for they are my rock and my salvation.

All of God’s promises are “yes” and “amen” in Christ Jesus. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. I keep my life free from the love of money and am content with what I have, because God will never leave me and will never forsake me.

I make it my goal to live a quiet life, minding my own business and working with my hands, so people who are not believers will respect the way I live, and so I will not need to depend on others. In my heart I have set apart Christ as Lord, and when someone asks about my hope I have, I am always ready to explain it in a gentle and respectful way.

When doubts assail me like a raging storm, I remember to not fear, because He is with me; and to not be dismayed, for He is my God. When I fear, I will trust in Him. The eyes of the LORD are on me, and His ears are attentive to my cries for help. He is for me and not against me and since God is for me, who can be against me? I remember that weeping may last for the night, but joy comes with the morning. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.

I don’t want to grow weary in doing good, for I know that at the proper time, I will receive a harvest if I don’t give up. God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, so I don’t give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing. I know that as I wait for the Lord, l will renew my strength; and will mount up with wings like eagles; I will run and not be weary; I will walk and not faint. So, I wait on Him and don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Today, I gratefully trust in God’s promises. They serve as an anchor for my soul, guiding me through life’s seasons. As I reflect upon them, my faith is deepened and my heart overflows with gratitude for a loving God who faithfully keeps His word.

  1. How can I deepen my trust in Your promises and make His word a continual source of solace and joy in my life?
  2. In what areas of my life do I struggle to fully lean on Your promises as my rock and salvation? How can I surrender those areas to You and find greater security in Your faithfulness?
  3. How can I actively live out my trust in Your promises, both in my actions towards others and in sharing the hope I have in Christ?

As I gaze upon the breathtaking beauty of a sunset, my heart is filled with awe and gratitude. Vibrant hues painting the sky remind me of the wonders of creation. The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of His hands. The setting sun is a gentle reminder that each day is a precious gift from above.

As the golden rays of sunlight dance upon the earth, I am reminded of God’s abundant provision. I look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet my heavenly Father feeds them. I know I’m much more valuable to Him than them. He rejoices over me with singing. The setting sun illuminates this truth, reminding me to trust in God’s faithful provision for my every need.

In the midst of life’s challenges and uncertainties, the fading light of the setting sun reminds me of the promise of another day. His mercies are renewed every morning, so great is His faithfulness. Even as the sun sets on one day, I am reminded that God’s plans for my life are filled with hope and purpose. As darkness gradually envelops the sky, I know God is my light. The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? I trust in His guiding light even in the darkest of times.

In a moment of transition between day and night, I am reminded to reflect on the brevity of life. Teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom. The setting sun prompts me to live each day with intentionality, cherishing every moment and seeking wisdom in all that I do.

In the quiet stillness of the evening, I find solace and peace. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. The setting sun serves as a reminder to let go of worries and anxieties, trusting in God’s unwavering protection.

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Today, as I contemplate the beauty of a sunset, my heart overflows with gratitude for life itself and for the One who paints such masterpieces in the sky. Each sunset becomes a personal reminder to be thankful to God for His love, His creation, and His faithfulness.

Looking back on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the abundant blessings that have been poured out upon me. My boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places. The Lord is good and stronghold in the times of trouble. I will tell of Your goodness; all day long I will speak.

In times of uncertainty, I am reminded of the birds of the air, who do not toil or worry about their provision. If God cares for them, how much more will He provide for me, His beloved child? I know that my Heavenly Father will meet all my needs according to His glorious riches.

I know that as I seek first His kingdom and righteousness, everything I need will be added in as well. Every good and perfect gift I receive is a reminder of His love and generosity. God invites me to delight in Him, promising to fulfill the desires of my heart. As I transform more and more into the image of His Son, my desires become more and more His desires.

As I seek His presence and find joy in Him, He blesses me beyond measure, exceeding my expectations. And as I honour the Lord with my resources and give cheerfully, I witness the overflowing abundance that He graciously pours into my life. With each act of giving, I experience His promise of pressed down, shaken-together blessings.

When I give generously and sacrificially, I am met with an outpouring of blessings that cannot be contained. The floodgates of heaven open wide, and God’s goodness overflows into every area of my life. Through each act of giving, I am reminded of the cheerful heart that God loves. He delights in my willingness to share His blessings with others, and in return, He refreshes and prospers me.

In awe of God’s power and love, I am reminded that He can do immeasurably more than I could ever ask or imagine. His generosity knows no bounds, bringing glory to His name throughout all generations. As I refresh others, I am refreshed in return. As I bless others, I get blessed.

God’s faithfulness is evident as He prospers those who choose to be generous, reminding me of the joy found in selfless giving. Tasting and experiencing the goodness of the Lord, I take refuge in Him. Blessed is the one who seeks shelter in His unfailing love and finds satisfaction in His abundant provision.

Today, I celebrate God’s generosity and give thanks for His continuous blessings in my life. He is faithful to provide for all my needs and delights in pouring out His love upon me.

In the depths of my soul, I have found solace and strength. The Lord is my Shepherd, and I lack nothing. His guidance has led me through the darkest valleys, and His love has provided me with abundant blessings. I will be still and know He is God.

Through Christ who strengthens me, I have faced challenges head-on, knowing that His power is made perfect in my weakness. He empowers me to accomplish every good work prompted by faith. His grace has carried me through trials and empowered me to persevere. His grace is sufficient for me.

In every circumstance, I have seen that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. Even in moments of adversity, I am reminded that His plans for me are greater than any setback I may face. Since God is for me, who can be against me? No weapon formed against me will prosper. Every test becomes a testimony of His goodness to me.

Appreciation fills my heart as I cherish the peace that Christ brings, unifying me with others in a bond of love. It is through Him I can appreciate the unique qualities and contributions of those around me. We bear one another’s burdens. We consider each other before we think of ourselves. My life is enriched by the acts of kindness and support shown by loved ones and strangers alike. Their selflessness has inspired me to extend love and compassion to those in need. We are doers of the Word and not hearers only.

Through acts of service and love towards others, my appreciation is expressed tangibly. We are kind and compassionate towards others, forgiving as the Lord forgave us. We forgive each other with our whole heart. Gratitude fills my being as I witness the transformative power of forgiveness in relationships and experience reconciliation firsthand.

Today, my life overflows with gratitude for God’s steadfast love, wisdom, and grace. And I am deeply appreciative of the people around me who have shown kindness, support, forgiveness, and love. My heart overflows with gratitude as I offer songs of thanksgiving and praise for the countless ways God has shown His faithfulness in my life.

Read My life is full of blessings and I am hopeful

My life is full of blessings because God is so good. He has guided me through the darkest times, giving me strength and hope. I have been through the fire and not been burned and through the water and not been drowned. In moments of doubt, He reminds me I am never alone and tells me to be strong and courageous and not be afraid or discouraged, for He is with me wherever I go.

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. His grace has transformed my life, showing me the way to forgiveness and reconciliation. I forgive the way Christ has forgiven me.

In times of uncertainty, God’s Word has been my anchor. His word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Through His Word, He has provided guidance and wisdom, shaping my character and molding my heart. How can anyone keep themselves pure? By obeying your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

God’s blessings are abundant and overflowing. He has blessed me with a loving family and faithful friends who support and uplift me. Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring are a reward from Him. His provision and faithfulness never cease to amaze me. My God will meet all my needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus!

Through His goodness, God has given me purpose and a calling to serve others. We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. He has equipped me with unique gifts and talents to make a positive impact in my Every day world. I use whatever gift I have received to serve others as a faithful steward of God’s grace in its various forms.

Today, I am grateful for God’s faithfulness and provision in my life. His blessings are evident in every aspect of my journey. I give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. My life is truly filled with abundance because God is so good.
