Gratitude Challenge Day 45: Appreciating Others

Are you looking for a simple way to deepen your faith and improve your relationships? Today’s Gratitude Challenge focuses on Appreciating Others—an act that not only strengthens community but aligns with Biblical teachings about love and kindness. Let’s explore how appreciating people around us can transform our lives and bring us closer to God’s purpose.

Why Appreciating Others Matters

Appreciating others is more than a polite gesture; it’s a powerful practice that reflects Christ’s love. When we recognize the good in those around us, we:

  • Encourage positive behavior
  • Build stronger connections
  • Create a culture of thankfulness

Related keywords: Encouragement, Community, Acts of Kindness

What Does the Bible Say about appreciating others?

Scripture repeatedly calls believers to honor and encourage one another. Consider these verses:

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
  • Romans 12:10: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
  • Hebrews 10:24: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Each passage highlights the importance of appreciation, encouragement, and actively seeking ways to uplift others.

How to Practice Appreciating Others Daily

You might wonder, “How can I show appreciation in practical ways?” Here are some simple steps:

1. Verbal Affirmation

Speak kind words. Thank someone for their help or acknowledge their strengths.

  • “I appreciate how you always listen patiently.”
  • “Your dedication inspires me.”

2. Acts of Service

Show gratitude through action. Small gestures can make a big impact.

  • Helping with chores
  • Sending an encouraging note
  • Offering prayers for someone’s needs

3. Public Recognition

Celebrate others’ achievements openly.

  • Share their story at church
  • Post a thank-you message online
  • Nominate them for a volunteer award

Common Questions About Appreciating Others

Q: Is appreciation just flattery?
No. Genuine appreciation comes from recognizing the true value in someone’s actions or character, not exaggeration.

Q: What if I’m shy or introverted?
Silent acts—like writing notes or praying for others—can be just as meaningful as spoken words.

Q: Can appreciation strengthen my faith?
Absolutely! Practicing gratitude and encouragement reflects God’s love and helps us grow spiritually (see Galatians 5:22-23).

Three Biblical Ways to Appreciate Others

  1. Pray for Them: Lift their needs before God (James 5:16).
  2. Serve Together: Join hands in ministry or outreach (Galatians 6:2).
  3. Express Thanks: Use words or actions to show gratitude (Colossians 3:15).

Conclusion & Call-to-Action

Appreciating others isn’t just good manners—it’s a reflection of Christ’s love working through us. Let’s commit today to see the best in those around us and express it genuinely.

How have you shown appreciation this week?

Read the Notes From Fear

Read Psalm 27:1-14

Can I pray?

At the wedding of our son and now daughter-in-law, I got to give a speech to welcome Rachel into our family. I had a lot of tears and trying not to cough giving it, so figured I wanted to use it again somewhere—it’s a good speech. Here it is for you.

Welcome Rachel into the family

When I dropped off the kids at school I would usually say “You are loved. Live loved. Have fun stormin’ the castle.”

That last part comes from The Princess Bride. When Fezzik, Indigo Mantoya and the mostly dead Wesley were leaving Miracle Max’s to go rescue Buttercup from Prince Humperdink and confront the 6-fingered man who killed Indigo Mantoya’s father.

Miracle Max and his wife are standing at the door waving and yells after them: “Have fun stormin’ the castle”. His wife asked him, “Do you think you it will work?” To which Miracle Max replies “It will take a miracle.”

I wanted to remind our kids that miracles happen—even when it looks almost impossible. So do what you need to do, for as long as you need to—no matter hard it is— because you never know what can happen until you try.

Live Loved

The first part about love, we worked out—and are working out— what that means. We’ve don’t have it all figured out.

In our family you are loved, so you can live loved.

We want to be patient and always try to be kind. We speak the truth to each other—in love—if we’re acting jealous or boastful or proud or rude. We do not demand our own way, but think of the interests of others. And we try not to be irritable, and choose to live unoffendable—we don’t want to keep any record of being wronged. We mourn injustice but rejoice whenever the truth wins out. We never give up on each other, we never lose faith in each other, we are always hopeful for each other, and have unbelievable tenacity in all of that.

We will pick up our sword and fight for you. We will lay down our life and die for you. We will sit in the dirt and cry with you. We’ll go to the street and dance with you…unless you’re dancing in the snow and it’s cold outside. I think we’ve already established that we’ll probably be inside making the hot chocolate… because real cold gets real old real fast.

How we Love God

Karen and I will always pray for you and will never give up. We want to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. We’ll never stop praying and give thanks in all circumstances for you. Karen’s been praying for you, Rachel, since the day we knew Kian was going to be born. We pray for both of you every day, and thank God for you whenever we think of you.

So Rachel—as we welcome you to our family—we are so glad we can celebrate with your family.

Address her family

You Givens and extended family and friends gathered here have had an important role raising a pretty incredible young woman. She is capable and caring and those are the highest compliments I can give anyone.

Thank you, Rachel for loving Kian.

We dropped off our 18-year-old son, in an isolated country on the other side of the world—before anyone knew anything about Covid. And we’ve been impressed with how quickly he’s matured into the capable and caring man that he is. We think you had a pretty big role in the transformation we’ve witnessed.

You both have gone through so much. We’re glad you had each other to go through it together. There is so much much more you’re going to go through…and you will get through it —together.

If I can leave you both with a blessing it’s this:
May you always have hearts to know God. May you grow more and more into who He has destined you to be, as you learn to know Him better and better.

If I can leave you both with something to work out in your day-to-day of everyday as you live your lives together it’s this:
The God of all hope will fill you with peace and joy as you trust in Him so you’ll overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit. So seek His presence always. Seek Him and find Him. Seek Him and know that you are loved!

So back to the reason we’re up here— to welcome Rachel to our family— I guess we need to make it official:

Rachel, You are loved. Live loved. Have fun stormin’ the castle.

____

Why Freedom from Fear only comes when we Love God

We’re going to look at living with Freedom from Fear and you might wonder why with that topic, I started with that story.

Don’t worry…it all connects.

The opposite of fear isn’t courage or faith.

There was a time I thought it was.

I can even remember stories I was told where it was the stated morality. “Courage rises up to defeat fear”. You can even hear it in the Psalm I read if you want to read it that way. I understood I needed to face fear head on. Suck it up, buttercup.

I come by it naturally. There’s even a word in Finnish that goes beyond simple persistence. It reflects a deep, almost stubborn will to push through hardship.

I did not know this word growing up. I’ve recently learned it. It explains so much of how I’ve lived my life. I bought a book to better understand it. The word is “Sisu”. It’s untranslatable into English, but it means:

Determination and grit in the face of adversity. Persistent courage and resilience beyond normal stamina. The ability to keep going despite challenges and setbacks. A mindset of taking action even when success seems unlikely.

I had no idea that’s what I was telling my kids to do when I said when I’d say, “You are loved. Live Loved. Have fun stormin’ the castle.”

Listen there is a place for dogged determinism even when success seems unlikely. But that’s when we talk about treating hardship as discipline.

When we’re talking about freedom from fear, we need to understand courage and tenacity doesn’t defeat fear.

You cannot have freedom from fear by trying hard to be courageous.

How can I say that?

The Problem

There’s a problem with thinking fear can be beat with a stiff upper lip.

The problem with thinking the opposite of fear is courage or faith lies is how it shapes your understanding and response to fear:

Courage and Faith Coexist with Fear

Courage and faith don’t eliminate fear; they exist alongside it. You can be afraid and still act courageously or have faith. They are responses to fear, not its opposite. (See Psalm 56:3) - When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

It’s not courage without fear. You need to have fear in order to act courageously. If you don’t have fear, you’re just acting normally. No one ever says “You spoke so courageously when you spoke” to me, because I’ve been doing it my entire life and I pretty much authentic when I speak, so there’s not much I won’t say. But if something you haven’t done and you come up with fear and trembling and share what you think God’s given you to say, that could take a lot of courage.

What’s courageous for you might not be courageous for me; what’s courageous for me might not be courageous for you. The difference is when we do it in spite of fear.

Courage and faith co-exist with fear.

Misunderstanding Fear’s Root

If you see courage or faith as the opposite of fear, you might ignore the deeper cause of fear. You don’t get to the root. You miss out of God’s best for you. Without addressing that root, we will not fully overcome fear. (See 1 John 4:18) - There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Leads to Suppression, Not Healing

Thinking courage opposes fear can push you to suppress fear rather than understand or heal it. This can cause stress or breakdown over time because fear remains unaddressed. (See Psalm 94:19) When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.

Limits Emotional Growth

Seeing faith as opposite to fear might cause you to judge yourself or others harshly when fear surfaces. Suck it up buttercup.

It can create guilt or shame instead of encouraging gentle growth through love. (See Romans 8:1) So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

The Bible makes it clear the opposite of fear is Love.

Fear is often a lack of love or trust in God’s love.

Let me show you.

Love removes fear related to punishment.

1 John 4:18 NLT Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.

God’s Spirit replaces fear with a relationship like a child to a father.

Romans 8:15 NLT So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”

God’s love brings deliverance from fear.

Psalm 34:4 NLT I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.

God’s Spirit empowers us with love instead of timidity.

2 Timothy 1:7 NLT For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

The opposite of Fear is Love.

When you trust in God’s love, fear lets go.

Why does this matter?

In this life we will have reason to fear.

We are not in heaven yet. We live in a world that has yet to be redeemed, that groans—as in childbirth—waiting for the children of God to be revealed. We are walking with people who are being redeemed who groan with creation longing for that day. And we are surrounded by others who have no interest in being redeemed, and who only do good when it serves their self-interests. And don’t forget there’s a conquered enemy from eternity past—seeking to kill, steal and destroy.

It’s no wonder Jesus promised that there would be trouble. If they hated him, they will hate us.

But we can have no fear of bad news even when it comes. It doesn’t come from steeling ourselves and shutting down our emotions it only comes from seeking the Lord always and embracing His inconceivable love.

When you trust in God’s love, fear lets go.

What would it feel like?

How would your life change if you faced fear by choosing love every time?

You will have reason to fear…but you don’t have to respond in fear.

When you are filled with His love, you will not naturally respond to fear in fear.

The God of hope fills us with peace and joy AS WE TRUST IN HIM so that we can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit.

Will you trust Him in His love?

When you trust in God’s love, fear lets go.

Start with understanding what God’s love is…

I guess we need to agree with what the love of God is

Understand God loves you…

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; Psalm 103:13 (NIVUK)

The enemy attacks fathers and families so it’s harder and harder to trust God as our good, good Father. But where our earthly fathers were never perfect—and some were downright evil—our heavenly Father is perfect and He shows us a love we can’t experience outside of Him.

Understand what his love is like…

Ephesians 3:17-19 NLT Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Wide: Christ’s Love Embraces All

Christ’s love extends to every person, regardless of background, past, or status.

John 3:16-17 NLT “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

Long: Christ’s Love Never Runs Out

His love stretches from eternity past to eternity future; it never fails nor fades.

Jeremiah 31:3 NLT Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.

Deep: Christ’s Love Reaches Our Lowest Points

No sin, shame, or struggle can keep His love away; He meets us in our deepest need.

Romans 8:38-39 NLT And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

High: Christ’s Love Lifts Us Up

His love not only saves us from our low points but also raises us up to new life and purpose.

Ephesians 2:4-6 NLT But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.

How can you know and experience that love so you can walk in freedom from fear?

That’s a great question, I’m so glad you asked.

KNOW the heights and depths and breadth and lengths of God’s love Tool

Let’s read that verse in Ephesians 3 again…

Ephesians 3:17-19 NLT Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Wide: Christ’s Love Embraces All

Christ’s love is full of kindness, reaching out with compassion to everyone, even those who feel unworthy.

Notice daily moments where God’s kindness shows up—answered prayers, unexpected encouragement, or forgiveness. Gratitude opens the door for you to see this more. Feel grateful for what you notice and do something to show appreciation.

Ask Holy Spirit:
What do you want to feel grateful for in this moment?

N — Nearness: Christ’s Love Is Always Present

Psalm 34:18“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Deep: Christ’s Love Reaches Our Lowest Points

O — Overcoming: Christ’s Love Conquers All Obstacles

Romans 8:38-39 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Matthew 11:28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

High: Christ’s Love Lifts Us Up

His love welcomes you just as you are and invites you into a relationship with Him, no matter your past.

Respond to Jesus’ invitation by spending quiet time with Him—resting in His presence and sharing your heart honestly.

Remember…

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 NLT

Ask Holy Spirit
What keeps me from regularly coming fully to Jesus?

When you trust in God’s love, fear lets go.

Challenge

Practical Steps to KNOW Christ’s Love

Kindness: Look for ways God has shown you grace and choose to show grace to others.

Nearness: Take moments throughout your day to acknowledge Jesus’ presence with you.

Overcoming: Memorize Romans 8:37-39 and speak it over yourself when you feel discouraged.

Welcoming: Accept Christ’s invitation by spending time with Him in prayer and worship.

Conclusion

In the next few moments you can ask Holy Spirit one or all of these questions. Or you can offer him your fear and receive from him his love. Make space to hear him quiet you with His love.

What do you want to feel grateful for in this moment?

How can I become more aware of Your nearness throughout my day?

How can I feel that your love is with me in this moment?

What keeps me from regularly coming fully to Jesus?

If I can leave you with the same blessing I left I left my kids with it’s this:
May you always have hearts to know God. May you grow more and more into who He has destined you to be, as you learn to know Him better and better.

If I can leave you with a challenge to work out in your day-to-day of everyday it’s this:
The God of all hope will fill you with peace and joy as you trust in Him so you’ll overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit. So seek His presence always. Seek Him and find Him. Seek Him and know that you are loved!

Can I Pray with You?

Ephesians 3:17-19 NLT

I thank you that you make your home in our hearts as we trust in you. I thank you that our roots will grow down into God’s love and keep us strong. And may we can have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep your love is. May we experience the love of Christ, though it is incomprehensible. Then we will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Relax for Perfect Love Tool… SPA

Because perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:20) and anything not done in love is useless (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

Source

It comes from God 1 John 4:7-9  NLT

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Purpose

Received by me 1 John 4:10 NLT

This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

Returns to God 1 John 2:5-6 NLT

But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Awareness

AND is shared to Others 1 John 4:20 NLT

If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?

What is Perfect Love?

It is a Decision Agapeo - Have I decided to love always? Can I decide to love in this moment?

It is an Emotion Phileo - Do I feel love in this situation? Can I still choose to love when I don’t feel it?

It is an Action - Splagchnon (root) - lit. Compassion . Have I turned off my compassion? Am I led by compassion like Jesus?

Love aligns your whole heart with God’s heart

1 John 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

You cannot align your heart with God unless you love others. Perfect love is complete love. I get love from God and share that love with others. It’s that love that drives out all fear. We have to stop being impressed with the size of our problem and find someone to bless so we can be blessed and find someone to refresh so we can be refreshed.

Imagine

What would it be like if fear - outside the moment - had no bearing on you? What would it feel like to love perfectly like God loves us?

We demolish arguments and every pretension with our actions. It’s not just our actions - it’s how we do them and why we do them and if it lines up with our decisions and our feelings. Because when all three align, we’re doing what we’re doing with our whole heart.

By the way, we’re told to love God (Mark 12:30), seek God (Jeremiah 29:13), trust God (Proverbs 3:5), praise God (Psalm 86:12) forgive others (Matthew 18:21-35) and work (Colossians 3:23-24) with our all our heart.

How are we do everything? Everything not done in faith is sin. Romans 14:23

FAITH

F - Freedom

Galatians 5:13-25
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

A - As unto the Lord

Colossians 3:15-17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I - In Love

1 Corinthians 16:14
Do everything in love.

T - Thankfulness

1 Thessalonians 5:18
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

H - Hope

Romans 12:11-12
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

When you do what you do this way, you show the world the truth.

The greatest miracle the world can see is the evidence of a renewed mind.

“God healed my back ache!” “Oh”

“God healed my cancer!” “Did he?”
“God raised me from the dead!” “Really?”

But they saw the freedom, and the thankfulness, and the love and the hope that you had through the process…and they knew you before you had any of that. And what they see in you shuts down any argument and pretension.

A renewed mind is that miracle they see that allows them to see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven.

negativity fast reflection

When I dropped my kids off at school I would tell them. “You are loved. Live loved. Have fun storming the castle.”

The first two come from the Bible. The final one from Princess Bride.

It was a shorthand for us. I wanted them to know they are loved by my wife and I so many others and God, I wanted them to know to show love to others. Finally, I wanted them to know whatever impossible and “boring” situation they had that day, they could make it fun and prevail (Wesley did rescue Buttercup after being mostly dead all day).

The fact we’re loved by God is so important. His love for us surpasses knowledge. Nothing can separate us from His love. He is love and love comes from him. He disciplines those He loves. Check out What Does it Mean to Live Loved? https://revtrev.com/livecasts/what-does-it-mean-to-live-loved/

negativity fast reflection

Do you ever take time to think about the possibilities outside space and time? You know, get the bigger picture that our physical world is unable to fill with any satisfaction? I like to let my brain hurt at times.

God made Adam from dirt…and breathed into him the breath of life…and walked with him in the garden in the cool of the day. What if that ticked off Lucifer enough to rebel? The Divine chose to live in dirt and move in dirt and walk with dirt and show favour to dirt. I could see how that could be offensive to Morning Star.

So the rebellious led a rebellion and got the dirt to sin by simply asking “Did God really say…”

And the rest of our history is God showing his grace and love to make it all right again. He showed His grace and love again and again and again. He told prophets what He was going to do to make it right again. Even angels longed to look to it all (1 Peter 1:12). Then the Divine took it a monumentous - apparently never done before - step further. He took on flesh and camped out for a while.

This was all part of God’s greater plan. He lived. He died sacrificially. He rose again.

Why he needed to show host of heaven His amazing grace, we won’t know this side of heaven. It’s those thoughts that make my brain hurt. But I’m so glad there is rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents (Luke 15:7).

And we all have a dance with the Divine. Pause on this negativity fast reflection - I am part of God’s masterpiece.

I am part of God’s masterpiece. He has created me anew in Christ Jesus, so I can do the good things he planned for me long ago. Even before he made the world, God loved me and chose me in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt me into his own family by bringing me to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. I belong to Christ and have become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! The Lord will work out his plans for my life.

Have I been acknowledging his favour on me lately?

Four Tips on How to Confront

Let's start with Peterson's transliteration of Matthew 7:1-5. He says, "Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, and criticize their faults—unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbours face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. Do you have the nerve to say, 'Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt? This whole traveling roadshow mentality over and over again, playing holier than thou part instead of just living your part, wipe that ugly sneer off your own face that you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbour.”

When I was younger, I thought confrontation was a good word. I was the one in people's faces. You say something; you better back that up. I would challenge and just ask my teachers in school, just ask my profs in university. Well, three years ago, I had a heart attack, and I've realized a lot of things since then, including being right isn't the most important thing. Loving right is more important. And so that's where these tips come from today. How do you love right during a confrontation?

So the first tip is, if you're challenged, it might be okay to ignore. This is what Nehemiah did when he was rebuilding the walls and people came and sent him letters saying, "You must meet with us." He ignored them. He took them to God. He said, "God, you take care of them. I don't have time for this. I'm in a great work." In his case, like they were going to lead him out to kill them. When someone wants to confront with you, sometimes you can just ignore it. Most times you can just ignore it—I'm not talking about your spouse, right? You got to work it out with them.

Do you have to respond? That's the question you should first ask yourself. When somebody comes to challenge you, do I have to respond? The second thing: if you can't avoid the challenge, look for the gold in the person. What does God love about them? Because when you start seeing them from God's perspective, it changes you. And probably will change your approach.

If you take the time to ask yourself, "Do I need to get involved? And what does God love about them?" If someone walks in the door of your office and is just going to yell at you, and as they're yelling, instead of thinking, "How am I going to defend myself?" ask God, ask Holy Spirit, "What do you love about them?" You'll be shocked and surprised what comes out of your mouth next. But the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say to turn that conversation.

If you are expecting to have confrontation, I want you to get God's perspective on it. And God, what do you love about them? The third tip: I know I'm not in the right place if I'm ready to put someone in their place. If I'm ready to knock someone off their high horse, I realize I'm on my high horse. You hear what I'm saying? If you need to confront but can take some time, take some time. Don't be so quick to put somebody in their place. Even if you're right, even if truth is on your side, you want to confront—take the time, hear from Holy Spirit, listen to what he says about what he loves about them.

And the fourth tip is really—you need to protect your peace. What do I mean by that? You need to forgive; you need to bless. All of us are going to have times when somebody misjudges something we've said or done or left undone or left unsaid. And some of those people will try to call us to an account. And generally, it's not when you are in the right place to love them back. It's totally all right, even in a couple relationship, to say, "Can we talk about this later?" Because if you can see that they're hurting, and that's why they're hurting you—yeah, no, it might not be right the way they're doing it—but how about loving them first?

How to speak the truth in love

One of the most important lessons found in the Bible is to speak the truth in love. This practice is essential for spiritual growth and developing a closer connection with Jesus Christ. It can be difficult to remain honest while still being kind, so it’s important to understand why this practice matters and how to apply it in our everyday lives. Learn more in the Message Speak the Truth in Love.

Ephesians 4:15-30 Holman Christian Standard Bible But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part. Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their thoughts. They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts. They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more. But that is not how you learned about the Messiah, assuming you heard about Him and were taught by Him, because the truth is in Jesus. You took off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires; you are being renewed in the spirit of your minds; you put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth. Since you put away lying, Speak the truth, each one to his neighbour, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, and don’t give the Devil an opportunity. The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need. No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption.

Can I pray?

I remember a conversation I had with a friend who was a leader in a church. She was saying something she said someone that really seemed harsh to me. She could tell by my face I was taken back by what she said.

Her retort was “We’re supposed to speak to the truth.”

To which I said, “The verse is …Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.”

She had realized, while it was the truth, it wasn’t the truth in love. She went to apologize.

So let’s start with the starting place.

What is truth?

That’s what Pilate asked when he was questioning Jesus and Jesus said he was born and came into the world to testify to the truth and the all who love the truth will recognize what he says is true John 18:37-38

Jesus had already declared in John 14:6 that

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

Jesus is the truth. We speak the truth in love to one another to build up each of us to more and more like Jesus. Hmmm…

Truth is not truth that I assume is the truth.

Truth is not my opinion.

Truth is not what’s popular to those I agree with.

Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

Jesus is the truth. He’s what we share in love. And as we share Him in love we all build up each other to become more and more like Jesus.

John also describes Jesus as the Word, the λόγος,

Jesus is the living λόγος

The Bible is the written λόγος

If you want to know what the truth is, find out the revelation of Jesus in the the written word. It is living and active and sharper than any two edge sword Hebrews 4:12 It shows you what the living Jesus wants you to know about Him.

What is love?

What is the love we’re supposed to be speaking the truth in?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

This is ἀγάπη love. It’s the same kind of love that’s in Ephesians 4:15. ἀγάπη love is that love that is a decision, a choice.

It’s our choice to speak the truth in love.

Why Speak Truth in Love?

Ephesians 4:15 tells us that speaking the truth in love helps us grow as believers. It brings about maturity for the individual and the church as a whole. Verse 14 tells us more about why,

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

As mature believers we are equipped for God’s good, worked out in and through us.

Ephesians 4:25 Speak the truth, each one to his neighbour, because we are members of one another.

We speak the truth in love to pursue growth and maturity that edifies the community of believers, because we are members of one another.

To sum up:

Speaking the truth in love is speaking that which is doctrinally correct and that which proceeds from a biblically committed life to a person who is in need of correction. It is done in love for the benefit of one who needs some adjustment to their attitudes or their actions.

Three reasons we might be afraid to speak the truth in love

The first reason we don’t speak the truth in love is fear of others. We are afraid of losing friendships or straining relationships. Unfortunately, this just compounds our own sin. In Galatians 1:10 , Paul warns us that if we are people-pleasers, we are not servants of Christ.

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. Galatians 1:10

Another reason we don’t speak to others when it is needed is because of fear of rejection. It’s possible that we’ll be labeled as judgmental or self-righteous. When this happens, we can take great comfort in 1 Peter 2:20-24

Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you. For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

A further reason we don’t speak the truth in love is because we fear not knowing what to say. While this concern is legitimate, it’s one that can be easily remedied by being prepared. Paul is clear in Romans 15:14 that all believers are able to help each other, and in 2 Timothy 2:15 Paul tells us how to be ready for this task. We are competent to counsel, but we must know what the Word of God says so that we know how to address each situation. And by the way, Jesus told us the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say. (Luke 12:12)

Luke 12:12 “And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.”

We can’t let fear keep us from speaking the truth in love.

Remember last week’s message? We are only to fear God.

Remember:

Proverbs 27:6 Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

How do you speak the truth in love?

We must remember, this is not about us; it is about the spiritual welfare of others. We also do this is because it is a command, as seen in Ephesians 4, Matthew 18:15-17 and James 5:19-20.

Be KIND

K - Know you can be like Jesus. Eph. 4:20 -21

I - Impart life when you impart correction. Eph. 4:26

N - Never not encourage. Eph. 4:29

D - Do not grieve Holy Spirit. Eph. 4:30

K - Know you can be like Jesus

Ephesians 4:20 -21 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him,

The Bible tells us that Jesus is “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

He spoke the truth in love to a woman by a well in John 4. Just by starting a conversation with her and asking for a drink of water, Jesus broke social norms of race and gender that would prevent a Jewish man from even talking to a Samaritan woman. Then he, after pointing out intimate details of unhealthy patterns she had, offered her hope and true satisfaction through a relationship with Him by faith.

Jesus offers love and acceptance alongside truth. Remember that your goal in speaking is to help others see how Jesus’ death and resurrection gives them a greater life than what the world offers.

Do I know I can be like Jesus?

I - Impart life when you impart correction.

Ephesians 4:26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry,

It’s OK to be angry, but don’t sin in your anger (Ephesians 4:26). Your words have the power to restore and creatively rebuild, but they also have the power to harm relationships in a lasting and damaging way (James 3:9-10).

Understand before being wanted to be understood.

Timely - don’t let the sun go down on your anger and don’t give the devil a foothold. v.27

Don’t nurse it, don’t rehearse it , don’t re-hash it, don’t bash it.

Am I reacting or intentionally building up?

N - Never not encourage

Ephesians 4:29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Know you’re not in the right place when you’re wanting to put someone else in their place.

Psalm 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

To knock someone off their high horse, you’re already on your own.

Ephesians 4:29b Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Realize you can judge to condemn or judge to discern.

One brings death and the other brings life.

Matthew 7:1-5 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Does this hurt me to say this or am I enjoying taking the other person down a peg or two?

D - Do not grieve Holy Spirit

Ephesians 4:30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

How do you not grieve Holy Spirit?

Ephesians 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Live the way he wants us to live.

Since you live by the Spirit, keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 Let His fruit grow in you and search the Spirit’s counsel before any exchange making sure to rely on the Spirit in your weakness.

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. Romans 8:26-27.

Am I grieving Holy Spirit in the way I’m living or what I’m saying?

K - Know you can be like Jesus. Eph. 4:20 -21

I - Impart life when you impart correction. Eph. 4:26

N - Never not encourage. Eph. 4:29

D - Do not grieve Holy Spirit. Eph. 4:30

What is the Result of Speaking the Truth in Love?

Paul gives us several results in 2 Timothy 2:24-26. (NLT)

A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.
  1. God can change their hearts.
  2. They can come to their senses.
  3. They can escape from the devil’s trap.

The key is we gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Holy Spirit will give you the words. I’ve learned it’s often best to ask genuine questions.

Conclusion

Speaking the truth in love will be difficult and may seem costly in the short run. But it’s an investment God wants us to make. Like an investment; it pays more long-range dividends rather than short-term gains .

We speak the truth in love to pursue growth and maturity that edifies the community of believers. Ephesians 4:16
