Happy endings are lazy writing

My son and I have an ongoing discussion with my wife. He and I are not satisfied with stories that have a predictable happy ending. One of my favourite movies out of Hollywood was Sandra Bullock's Premonition. I know, it came out in 2007. It's been a long time since I've seen a real good movie.
